Prostate Cancer: The Couple's Disease - September 16, 2007

--September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and one out of every 6 men develops prostate cancer in his lifetime. But, with such high percentages of development of this disease, there are correspondingly high percentages of treatments and operations which drastically reduce the possibilities of death from this common disease.

--Ron interviews Dr. Randy Fagin, the director of the Prostate Center of Austin, who elaborates on the importance of preventative check-ups involving a combination of a PSA (the prostate specific antigen test) and a rectal exam every year, to catch the disease early and hopefully prevent serious complications from it.

--Since men are more likely to not consider these check-ups necessarily important, more involvement from their spouses is usually necessary to make sure that they receive the yearly screenings. Also, the complications from prostate cancer can involve sexual dysfunction and sleep disruption, making this truly a "couple's disease."

--Dr. Fagin explains why wives should be involved with getting their husbands checked for this disease, and also describes "robotic surgery," which he has performed more than 900 times, utilizing robotic technology to perform operations to remove men's prostate cancers.

*For the month of September, free prostate screenings are being given in the Valley! more info
